How to Get a Gemini API Key

To use certain AI features in Koto, a Google Gemini API Key is required. Follow the steps below to obtain your API Key.

1. Access Google AI Studio

Go to Google AI Studio.

2. Sign In with Your Google Account

Click the “Get Started” button at the top right and sign in with your Google account.

3. Generate an API Key

1. Click “Get API Key” from the menu on the left side.
2. Click the “Create API Key” button.
3. Select an existing Google Cloud project or create a new project.
   • If you have no preference, creating a new project is recommended.
4. Once generated, click “Copy API key” to copy it to your clipboard.

4. Set the API Key in Koto

1. Open the settings in Koto.
2. Paste the copied API Key into the “Gemini API Key” field under AI Settings.
3. Save the settings to complete setup.

Important Notes

• When entered into Koto, your Gemini API Key is saved encrypted in your browser’s LocalStorage.
• Your saved Gemini API Key is only used to directly communicate with Google Gemini API servers from your browser. It is never transmitted to Koto servers.
• This API Key is used for AI Chat and Article Translation (using Gemini 3.7 Flash, Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, or their successors). It is not used for automatic article summaries.
• Gemini API Keys can be obtained for free (subject to Google’s free tier limits).
• Keep your API Key confidential and do not share it with third parties.
